Blue Jays are so clever

Monday, 4 January 2021

Well now, that wasn’t so bad. First day back to work went well. Everyone looked rested, healthy and ready to get back to it.

I started my day, as I usually do, feeding my cats and then the birds. I bought some “critter” food from Lowe’s which is essentially corn with a handful of peanuts 🥜 in their shell. The squirrels don’t care for it but the blue jays love it, especially the peanuts. Yesterday, I started hiding the peanuts. I put one in the platform feeder under other seeds, then watched the blue jay toss the other seeds aside, looking for the peanut. So, this morning I hid one in the Christmas tree. I wasn’t sure he’d find it as the birds had yet to come near the tree.

I kept my eye on the tree but he wasn’t coming for it. Then I got busy with work and when I checked the tree again, the peanut was gone! I can’t believe he found it! Then he kept coming back, looking for more!

A few night shots from around the yard and one of the Hilton Lac Leamy. All season they have been creative with the lights, first a heart for the front-line workers during Covid, then a tree for Christmas, and now 21.
