Tuesday, 10 November 2020 – Happy Birthday Vanessa!!!
A year ago today, about this time – 8:30 pm – I was checking into a Fort Lauderdale hotel for my pre-cruise vacation. The weather was as nice there as it is here today, in the low twenties (Celsius, that is).
This warm spell has helped me cross a lot of things off my to-do list. Everything is away for the winter. Scrapers are out and ready to go. Christmas lights and garland are up on the veranda and will go on after the American Thanksgiving.
The bird feeders are set up and ready for the counting season, which begins this Saturday! (If birds are your hobby, you should definitely check out Project Feeder Watch, which is available in Canada and the US.) This season I added a platform feeder to the front of the house, as well as a tall branch…who am I kidding, it’s a tree!
Mom mentioned she was going to trim some branches from the Manitoba maple tree that towers over the side veranda. It provides beautiful shade in the summer and I hate to see trees being cut but sometimes it can’t be helped. I heard a large muffled thud and immediately think Mom has gotten herself into trouble. I run out onto the veranda to find her safe but covered in sawdust. She cut a limb from the tree…a large limb…that was the thud. I was sad to see it but, hey…

Later, I step out to the veranda to take in the late afternoon air. The sun was beginning to descend and it was just so lovely. Mom pointed to her handy work around one of the bird feeders. She planted the tree limb next to the feeder! I was overcome with joy! It looks amazing and she tells me a chickadee had already tried it out!
