A loon’s hauntingly beautiful call reverberated the morning. I was sitting on the veranda, sipping my steaming tea when I heard it. Just the other day, I was wondering if he’d be back this spring.
Every spring for many years (15+) this lone loon visits the river for a short time. He calls out, maybe three times, over the course of a few days and then he’s gone, only to return next spring.
Binoculars in hand, I found him, grabbed my camera and just as I pressed the shutter button, he dived down, under the water.
I walked down to the river, sat on our bench and waited for him to return.
As I settled on the bench, the great blue heron flew from his spot near me, across to the other side of the river. I was thrilled to see him, so much so, I almost forgot to take his picture!

I’ve been keeping a watchful eye for him for weeks, but didn’t realize he was on my side of the river, where I can’t see!!!
