Send yourself a positive message…Day 8 of 30 Days of Happiness

Send yourself a post card reminding yourself how amazing you are and that your goals are, oh so close!

I first read about this idea in Pam Grout’s book, E-Squared and decided to give it a try while I was on a Caribbean cruise this winter (Jan 2014.) I sent postcards from all the ports of call with messages of encouragement, reminders, and just plain “You are awesome!”

A postcard I sent to myself from St. Lucia, January 2014.

The giddy, uplifting feel I got from reading these messages – weeks later – was amazing. Not to mention what a nice reminder it was of all the amazing places I visited and the wonderful time I had with my Mom.

I highly recommend giving this a try, but don’t wait for your next trip – purchase some postcards from your local bookstore/tourist area and send it to yourself today!

Are we Happy yet? A recap of the first week of the 30 days of Happiness.

Let’s recap the first week of Happiness:

Have you ever noticed that some people seem to be happy all the time and yet others struggle with it? The 30 days of Happiness project provides daily guidance in the form of fun and easy ideas to help inspire the spark of happiness in each of us to grow and grow and grow.

So let’s take a look at what we’ve accomplished so far this week: We’ve created fail-safes – things or people that can trigger happy, loving and positive thoughts that can lift us out of a negative space. We now start our day with being grateful and remember to be grateful throughout our day and we have set positive boundaries by only saying YES when our whole heart and soul are in it! Everyday we do something we love – dancing, playing, singing, painting… and we sing our favourite songs out loud with joy! We’ve given our worries to our higher power and we no longer take things personally.

Wow! That’s quite the week. How are you feeling? Happy and lighter I hope!

Don’t take anything personally. Day 7 of 30 Days of Happiness

Don’t take anything personally

winter country road

It’s so easy to get sucked-up into the moment, insults hurling, tempers blazing – doesn’t matter if it’s the result of someone cutting you off in traffic, taking your parking spot, cutting in front of you in line… the actions of others are not a personal attack against you. It may feel like it at times. Heck, they might even mean it to be but on a higher level – it has nothing to do with you and everything to do with them.

We don’t know what’s going on in the minds and lives of others. We don’t know what could have happened to that person during their day, maybe they just learned they have six weeks to live and are preoccupied with the thoughts associated with pending death that they didn’t even see you trying to merge in front of them on the highway.

This isn’t about YOU; it’s about THEM!

If you find yourself in a situation where insults are hurling and tempers are blazing, take a step back from the situation – it could be a literal or figurative step – take several deep and cleansing breaths then look at the situation from a different perspective. Take yourself out of the picture. Know that this isn’t about YOU; it’s about THEM. Listen, truly listen to what this person is saying to you. Ignore the insults and words that are born of rage and focus instead on the tone, the body language, and the underlying message. Ask your angels (and theirs) for help in understanding and in diffusing the situation.

I truly believe that everything happens for a reason and there is a reason this person is standing in front of you right now, so look at this situation as an opportunity to learn something new – something about yourself, about others, about God. What could God’s message to you be?

So, the next time someone cuts you off, instead of reacting with rage, ask, “What’s this about?” I usually end up laughing because the answer is on the license plate or a bumper sticker on the car that just cut me off and usually it’s the answer to a question I asked guidance for. Sometimes it’s your angel’s way of suggesting you slow down and pay attention to what’s going on around you – don’t know about you but sometimes I zone out while I’m driving.

If you find yourself in a confrontational situation, remember: Don’t take it personally: It’s not about YOU, it’s about THEM.

P.S. If you feel you need some help in not taking things personally, might I suggest reading The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz?

Don’t Worry… Be Happy! Day 6 of 30 Days of Happiness

Don’t worry… Be Happy. Such a catchy phrase (and song), and – it’s soooo true!

The only thing worrying accomplishes is to bring you down. Seriously, look back at all the times you worried over something, whether it was financial, health, and employment, what was the outcome and did worrying help? (If it did, I want to hear about it so drop me a line and let’s chat.)

I read a quote somewhere that pretty much sums up my feelings on worry:

Worrying is like praying for what you don’t want.

In my day one – fail-safes blog post, I talk about “think positive thoughts and positive energy comes to you”. The same holds true for negative thoughts – of which worry is – attracting negative energy. I know it may seem like we’re pre-wired to worry, that it’s ingrained in our DNA but believe me when I say the opposite is true. We’re beings of love and light and our true nature is to be positive and see only love.

It’s not your job to worry so give any – and all – worries to God, your angels and your spirit team

I’m not sure at what point we gave up on God (or whomever or whatever your higher power is called) and giving our problems and worries to him. It’s not your job to worry and figure things out… It’s his and he does a much better job than you or I ever will. And, have you ever noticed that, somehow, someway, things always have a way of turning out OK. Maybe not the way you wanted it to work out but it still worked out for the best?

Don’t worry! It’s not your job to worry so give any – and all – worries to God, your angels and your spirit team and sing along to Bobby McFerrin:
